ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 had reported over 676 million cases by March 2023. The main aim of this study is to investigate whether the levels of anti-S and anti-N antibodies could precisely indicate the degree of protection against SARS-CoV-2 and affect the probability or time of contracting COVID-19. In this study, a serosurveillance study was conducted in healthcare workers (HCWs) at a regional hospital in Taiwan to evaluate their antibody levels based on infection and vaccination status. Of 245 HCWs enrolled, all have been vaccinated prior to infection. Of these, 85 participants were infected by SARS-CoV-2, while 160 participants were not infected at the time of blood sample collection. The level of anti-SARS-CoV-2 S antibody was significantly higher in the infected HCWs than in the non-infected participants (p < 0.001). It is worth noting that the mean duration between the administration of the last dose of the vaccine and the occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 infection was 5.61 ± 2.95 months. Our follow-up survey revealed that the non-infected group had significantly higher levels of antibodies compared to the infected group (all p < 0.001). In conclusion, this study suggests that the level of antibodies could serve as a reflection of the protective efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 infection. It has the implication for vaccine decision-making policies in the future.

ABSTRACT

To explore the autoimmune response and outcome in the central nervous system (CNS) at the onset of viral infection and correlation between autoantibodies and viruses. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted in 121 patients (2016-2021) with a CNS viral infection confirmed via cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) next-generation sequencing (cohort A). Their clinical information was analysed and CSF samples were screened for autoantibodies against monkey cerebellum by tissue-based assay. In situ hybridisation was used to detect Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in brain tissue of 8 patients with glial fibrillar acidic protein (GFAP)-IgG and nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissue of 2 patients with GFAP-IgG as control (cohort B). RESULTS: Among cohort A (male:female=79:42; median age: 42 (14-78) years old), 61 (50.4%) participants had detectable autoantibodies in CSF. Compared with other viruses, EBV increased the odds of having GFAP-IgG (OR 18.22, 95% CI 6.54 to 50.77, p<0.001). In cohort B, EBV was found in the brain tissue from two of eight (25.0%) patients with GFAP-IgG. Autoantibody-positive patients had a higher CSF protein level (median: 1126.00 (281.00-5352.00) vs 700.00 (76.70-2899.00), p<0.001), lower CSF chloride level (mean: 119.80±6.24 vs 122.84±5.26, p=0.005), lower ratios of CSF-glucose/serum-glucose (median: 0.50[0.13-0.94] vs 0.60[0.26-1.23], p=0.003), more meningitis (26/61 (42.6%) vs 12/60 (20.0%), p=0.007) and higher follow-up modified Rankin Scale scores (1 (0-6) vs 0 (0-3), p=0.037) compared with antibody-negative patients. A Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that autoantibody-positive patients experienced significantly worse outcomes (p=0.031). CONCLUSIONS: Autoimmune responses are found at the onset of viral encephalitis. EBV in the CNS increases the risk for autoimmunity to GFAP.

ABSTRACT

Swine acute diarrhoea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), which is a recently discovered enteric coronavirus, is the major aetiological agent that causes severe clinical diarrhoea and intestinal pathological damage in pigs, and it has caused significant economic losses to the swine industry. Nonstructural protein 5, also called 3C-like protease, cleaves viral polypeptides and host immune-related molecules to facilitate viral replication and immune evasion. Here, we demonstrated that SADS-CoV nsp5 significantly inhibits the Sendai virus (SEV)-induced production of IFN-ß and inflammatory cytokines. SADS-CoV nsp5 targets and cleaves mRNA-decapping enzyme 1a (DCP1A) via its protease activity to inhibit the IRF3 and NF-κB signaling pathways in order to decrease IFN-ß and inflammatory cytokine production. We found that the histidine 41 and cystine 144 residues of SADS-CoV nsp5 are critical for its cleavage activity. Additionally, a form of DCP1A with a mutation in the glutamine 343 residue is resistant to nsp5-mediated cleavage and has a stronger ability to inhibit SADS-CoV infection than wild-type DCP1A. In conclusion, our findings reveal that SADS-CoV nsp5 is an important interferon antagonist and enhance the understanding of immune evasion by alpha coronaviruses.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Patients with gastric cancer (GC) are more likely to be infected with 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the prognosis is worse. It is urgent to find effective treatment methods. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the potential targets and mechanism of ursolic acid (UA) on GC and COVID-19 by network pharmacology and bioinformatics analysis. METHODS: The online public database and weighted co-expression gene network analysis (WGCNA) were used to screen the clinical related targets of GC. COVID-19-related targets were retrieved from online public databases. Then, a clinicopathological analysis was performed on GC and COVID-19 intersection genes. Following that, the related targets of UA and the intersection targets of UA and GC/COVID-19 were screened. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genome Analysis (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were performed on the intersection targets. Core targets were screened using a constructed protein-protein interaction network. Finally, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) of UA and core targets were performed to verify the accuracy of the prediction results. RESULTS: A total of 347 GC/COVID-19-related genes were obtained. The clinical features of GC/COVID-19 patients were revealed using clinicopathological analysis. Three potential biomarkers (TRIM25, CD59, MAPK14) associated with the clinical prognosis of GC/COVID-19 were identified. A total of 32 intersection targets of UA and GC/COVID-19 were obtained. The intersection targets were primarily enriched in FoxO, PI3K/Akt, and ErbB signaling pathways. HSP90AA1, CTNNB1, MTOR, SIRT1, MAPK1, MAPK14, PARP1, MAP2K1, HSPA8, EZH2, PTPN11, and CDK2 were identified as core targets. Molecular docking revealed that UA strongly binds to its core targets. The MDS results revealed that UA stabilizes the protein-ligand complexes of PARP1, MAPK14, and ACE2. CONCLUSION: This study found that in patients with gastric cancer and COVID-19, UA may bind to ACE2, regulate core targets such as PARP1 and MAPK14, and the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, and participate in antiinflammatory, anti-oxidation, anti-virus, and immune regulation to exert therapeutic effects.

ABSTRACT

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that lasts for a long time and doesn't alleviate with rest. The number of the cases has been increasing during the era of COVID-19 pandemic. Acupuncture may have some effect on chronic fatigue syndrome, but its mechanism remains unclear. This article was to summarize the specific manifestations of abnormal central mechanism in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome through laboratory tests and neuroimaging. It was found from the laboratory evaluation that there were changes in the structure of the frontal cortex, thalamus and other brain tissues; factors, including IFN-α and IL-10 in cerebrospinal fluid were found abnormal; results of oxidative and nitrosative stress and changes in neurobiochemical substances, e.g. hypothalamus hormone levels and neurotransmitter concentrations, were observed. With magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography, it was shown that the partial brain of persons with chronic fatigue syndrome had morphological changes with diminished grey matter and white; changes in cerebral blood flow velocity caused by decreased perfusion and functional activity with abnormal connectivity in brain were detected. In addition, there was significant decrease in glucose metabolism accompanied with neuroinflammatory response; metabolic disorders of serotonergic, cholinergic, glutamatergic and γ-aminobutyric acid energy neurotransmitters were also discovered. The regulatory effect of acupuncture on the above central neurological abnormalities in chronic fatigue syndrome model animals was elaborated, and the direction for further research was analyzed in order to provide ideas for further research on the central mechanism of acupuncture treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has yet to be proven to alter male reproductive function, particularly in the majority of mild/asymptomatic patients. The purpose of this study was to explore whether mild/asymptomatic COVID-19 affects semen quality and sex-related hormone levels. To find suitable comparative studies, a systematic review and meta-analysis was done up to January 22, 2022, by using multiple databases (Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase). Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to identify and choose the studies. Meta-analysis was used to examine the semen parameters and sex-related hormones of mild/asymptomatic COVID-19 patients before and after infection. The effects of semen collection time, fever, and intensity of verification on semen following infection were also investigated. A total of 13 studies (n = 770) were included in the analysis, including three case-control studies, six pre-post studies, and four single-arm studies. A meta-analysis of five pre-post studies showed that after infection with COVID-19, sperm concentration (I2 = 0; P = 0.003), total sperm count (I2 = 46.3%; P = 0.043), progressive motility (I2 = 50.0%; P < 0.001), total sperm motility (I2 = 76.1%; P = 0.047), and normal sperm morphology (I2 = 0; P = 0.001) decreased. Simultaneously, a systematic review of 13 studies found a significant relationship between semen collection time after infection, inflammation severity, and semen parameter values, with fever having only bearing on semen concentration. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in sex-related hormone levels before and after infection in mild/asymptomatic patients. Mild/asymptomatic COVID-19 infection had a significant effect on semen quality in the short term. It is recommended to avoid initiating a pregnancy during this period of time.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this systematic review and meta-analysis were to identify the characteristics of internet-based psychoeducational programs for caregivers of people living with dementia and to synthesise program effectiveness. METHOD: Five English databases and four Chinese databases were searched in June 2021 with no time limit applied. A narrative summary was performed to describe the characteristics of studies reviewed. Meta-analysis was applied to synthesise the pooled effects where data were available. RESULTS: A total of 14352 articles were identified from the database search and 19 were included in the final review. Interventions comprised educational, psychological, and behavioural training relevant to dementia care. Program duration ranged from 3 weeks to 12 months. Meta-analysis of 13 RCTs showed that internet-based psychoeducational programs had a significant effect on reducing caregivers' depressive symptoms (SMD -0.19; 95% CI -0.03 - 0.35) and stress (SMD -0.29; 95% CI -0.03 -0.54). However, these programs did not show an effect on quality of life, anxiety, burden or self-efficacy in caregivers. CONCLUSION: Internet-based psychoeducational programs can improve some aspects of caregivers' mental health and emotional wellbeing. The effects of programs on self-efficacy, anxiety, burden and quality of life for caregivers remain inconclusive.

ABSTRACT

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the seventh coronavirus (CoV) that has spread in humans and has become a global pandemic since late 2019. Efficient and accurate laboratory diagnostic methods are one of the crucial means to control the development of the current pandemic and to prevent potential future outbreaks. Although real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) is the preferred laboratory method recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for diagnosing and screening SARS-CoV-2 infection, the versatile immunoassays still play an important role for pandemic control. They can be used not only as supplemental tools to identify cases missed by rRT-PCR, but also for first-line screening tests in areas with limited medical resources. Moreover, they are also indispensable tools for retrospective epidemiological surveys and the evaluation of the effectiveness of vaccination. In this review, we summarize the mainstream immunoassay methods for human coronaviruses (HCoVs) and address their benefits, limitations, and applications. Then, technical strategies based on bioinformatics and advanced biosensors were proposed to improve the performance of these methods. Finally, future suggestions and possibilities that can lead to higher sensitivity and specificity are provided for further research.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA detection in the nasopharynx is considered a biomarker for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We evaluated its performance as a reflex test to triage EBV seropositives within an NPC screening program in China. METHODS: The study population was embedded within an ongoing NPC screening trial and included 1111 participants who screened positive for anti-EBV VCA (antibodies against EBV capsid antigens)/EBNA1 (EBV nuclear antigen1)-IgA antibodies (of 18 237 screened). Nasopharynx swabs were collected/tested for EBNA1 gene EBV DNA load. We evaluated performance of EBV DNA in the nasopharynx swab as a reflex test to triage EBV serological high-risk (those referred to endoscopy/MRI) and medium-risk (those referred to accelerated screening) individuals. RESULTS: By the end of 2019, we detected 20 NPC cases from 317 serological high-risk individuals and 4 NPC cases from 794 medium-risk individuals. When used to triage serological high-risk individuals, nasopharynx swab EBV DNA was detected in 19/20 cases (positivity rate among cases: 95.0%; 95% CI, 75.1%-99.9%), with a referral rate of 63.4% (201/317, 95% CI, 57.8%-68.7%) and NPC detection rate among positives of 9.5% (19/201, 95% CI, 5.8%-14.4%). The performance of an algorithm that combined serology with triage of serology high-risk individuals using EBV DNA testing yielded a sensitivity of 72.4% (95% CI, 3.0%-81.4%) and specificity of 97.6% (95% CI, 97.2%-97.9%). When used to triage EBV serological medium-risk individuals, the positivity rate among cases was 75.0% (95% CI, 19.4%-99.4%), with a referral rate of 61.8% (95% CI, 58.4%-65.2%) and NPC detection rate among positives of 0.6% (95% CI, 0.1%-1.8%). CONCLUSIONS: Nasopharynx swab EBV DNA showed promise as a reflex test to triage serology high-risk individuals, reducing referral by ca. 40% with little reduction in sensitivity compared to a serology-only screening program.

ABSTRACT

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the pathogen of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has infected hundreds of millions of people and caused millions of deaths. Looking for valid druggable targets with minimal side effects for the treatment of COVID-19 remains critical. After discovering host genes from multiscale omics data, we developed an end-to-end network method to investigate drug-host gene(s)-coronavirus (CoV) paths and the mechanism of action between the drug and the host factor in a directional network. We also inspected the potential side effect of the candidate drug on several common comorbidities. We established a catalog of host genes associated with three CoVs. Rule-based prioritization yielded 29 Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs via accounting for the effects of drugs on CoVs, comorbidities, and drug-target confidence information. Seven drugs are currently undergoing clinical trials as COVID-19 treatment. This catalog of druggable host genes associated with CoVs and the prioritized repurposed drugs will provide a new sight in therapeutics discovery for severe COVID-19 patients.

Objective: In this study, we investigated the potential material basis of Yupingfeng powder in the prevention and treatment of 2019 novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) by applying molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulation technology. Design: The active ingredients and predictive targets of Yupingfeng powder were sourced using the TCMSP, ETCM, and TCMIP traditional Chinese medicine databases. NCP-related targets were then acquired from the DisGeNET and GeneCards databases, and common disease-drug targets were imported into the STRING database, and Cytoscape software was used to generate a protein-protein interaction network following the use of a network topology algorithm to identify key target genes. Gene Ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis was then performed using the target genes and GOEAST and DAVID online tools. The mechanism of Yupingfeng powder in the prevention and treatment of NCP was analyzed with reference to the relevant literature. AutoDock software was used for molecular docking, the preliminary analysis of binding status, and to identify the best conformation. Desmond software was used to perform molecular dynamic simulations for protein and compound complexes, perform free energy calculations and hydrogen bond analysis, and to further verify the binding mode. Results: Overall, 38 main active components and 218 predictive targets of Yupingfeng powder were identified and 298 disease targets related to NCP were retrieved from disease databases. Yupingfeng powder was found to act predominantly on the TNF, Toll-like receptor, HIF-1, NOD-like receptor, cytokine-receptor interaction, MAPK, T cell receptor, and VEGF signaling pathways. Molecular docking of the three selected key active components with the 3CL-like protease (3CL-Pro) of SARS-CoV-2 showed that they each had a strong binding force and good affinity. Conclusions: Yupingfeng powder primarily acts on multiple active ingredients and potential targets through multiple action channels and signal pathways. Molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulation technology were used to effectively predict and analyze the potential mechanism by which this Chinese medicine can combat NCP. These results provide a reference for developing new modern Chinese medicine preparations against NCP in the future.

ABSTRACT

Taiwan is expected to reach super-aged status by 2026, leading to an increased demand for elderly caregiving services. Low local unemployment and a dwindling working-age population mean the island's care system relies heavily on female foreign domestic workers (FDWs) from Southeast Asian neighbors such as Vietnam to satisfy labor shortages. Although suggested by anecdotal evidence, limited research has been conducted on the link between the shortfall in FDW qualifications, training, preparedness, and expertise and their employment stressors. Therefore, this study aims to assist FDWs by evaluating their stressors and helping them better understand health care delivery by (1) administering the Modified Caregiver Strain Index (MCSI) revised 2003 questionnaire, (2) performing semi-structured in-depth one-on-one interviews, (3) classifying interview results according to thematic analysis, and (4) using these themes to devise and deliver a 12-week multilingual health education teach-back program. Our results indicate that Vietnamese FDWs face specific challenges, including language barriers, homesickness, intensive physical and psychological work demands, stress adaptation, and occupational exposures. Despite yielding no significant improvements in caregiving strain, our intervention, conducted at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, pinpoints and classifies areas of grave concern and proposes recommendations that can assist long-term care (LTC) stakeholders in understanding and overcoming their respective challenges, thereby improving the quality of elderly care.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an emerging virus responsible for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 binds to the human cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) through its receptor-binding domain in the S1 subunit of the spike protein (S1-RBD). The serum levels of autoantibodies against ACE2 are significantly higher in patients with COVID-19 than in controls and are associated with disease severity. However, the mechanisms through which these anti-ACE2 antibodies are induced during SARS-CoV-2 infection are unclear. In this study, we confirmed the increase in antibodies against ACE2 in patients with COVID-19 and found a positive correlation between the amounts of antibodies against ACE2 and S1-RBD. Moreover, antibody binding to ACE2 was significantly decreased in the sera of some COVID-19 patients after preadsorption of the sera with S1-RBD, which indicated that antibodies against S1-RBD can cross-react with ACE2. To confirm this possibility, two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs 127 and 150) which could bind to both S1-RBD and ACE2 were isolated from S1-RBD-immunized mice. Measurement of the binding affinities by Biacore showed these two mAbs bind to ACE2 much weaker than binding to S1-RBD. Epitope mapping using synthetic overlapping peptides and hydrogen deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) revealed that the amino acid residues P463, F464, E465, R466, D467 and E471 of S1-RBD are critical for the recognition by mAbs 127 and 150. In addition, Western blotting analysis showed that these mAbs could recognize ACE2 only in native but not denatured form, indicating the ACE2 epitopes recognized by these mAbs were conformation-dependent. The protein-protein interaction between ACE2 and the higher affinity mAb 127 was analyzed by HDX-MS and visualized by negative-stain transmission electron microscopy imaging combined with antigen-antibody docking. Together, our results suggest that ACE2-cross-reactive anti-S1-RBD antibodies can be induced during SARS-CoV-2 infection due to potential antigenic cross-reactivity between S1-RBD and its receptor ACE2.

ABSTRACT

Taiwan is expected to reach super-aged status by 2026, leading to an increased demand for elderly caregiving services. Low local unemployment and a dwindling working-age population mean the island's care system relies heavily on female foreign domestic workers (FDWs) from Southeast Asian neighbors such as Vietnam to satisfy labor shortages. Although suggested by anecdotal evidence, limited research has been conducted on the link between the shortfall in FDW qualifications, training, preparedness, and expertise and their employment stressors. Therefore, this study aims to assist FDWs by evaluating their stressors and helping them better understand health care delivery by (1) administering the Modified Caregiver Strain Index (MCSI) revised 2003 questionnaire, (2) performing semi-structured in-depth one-on-one interviews, (3) classifying interview results according to thematic analysis, and (4) using these themes to devise and deliver a 12-week multilingual health education teach-back program. Our results indicate that Vietnamese FDWs face specific challenges, including language barriers, homesickness, intensive physical and psychological work demands, stress adaptation, and occupational exposures. Despite yielding no significant improvements in caregiving strain, our intervention, conducted at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, pinpoints and classifies areas of grave concern and proposes recommendations that can assist long-term care (LTC) stakeholders in understanding and overcoming their respective challenges, thereby improving the quality of elderly care.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the potential molecular mechanism of Astragalus membranaceus in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)based on the network pharmacology and molecular docking. Methods The traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology database and analysis platform(TCMSP)and the related literature were searched to obtain the active ingredients and predictive targets of Astragalus membranaceus. The herbal targets were selected based on STRING database for PPI network construction and the results were displayed by Cytoscape software. The key targets were screened through the algorithm of network topology and the network modules were analyzed. Gene Ontology(GO)analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG)pathway enrichment analysis were carried out on key target genes using Gene Ontology Enrichment Analysis Software Toolkit(GOEAST)and The Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery(DAVID)online tools. Combined with relevant literature, the mechanism of Astragalus membranaceus in the treatment of COVID-19 was analyzed. Results A total of 19 candidate active components and 889 predictive targets of Astragalus membranaceus were selected by oral bioavailability(OB)and drug-likeness(DL)values. The preventive mechanism of Astragalus membranaceus might be closely related to the signal pathways involved in the body's living nerve ligand receptor interaction, calcium signal, T cell receptor, cAMP signal pathway and chemokines. Conclusion Astragalus membranaceus mainly plays roles in many kinds of targets through multi-approach and multi-signaling pathways.

Since December 8, 2019, an acute respiratory illness has spread rapidly in China, causing 3,097 people to die as of March 7, and it has become a global crisis. The common symptoms are fever, fatigue, dry cough, myalgia, and dyspnea. This case report presents a 36-year-old male who was diagnosed with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infected pneumonia on February 2, 2020. This patient received veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) last for 10 days as salvage treatment as his condition became critical in the acute setting. As soon as his status became stable, he began to receive an early rehabilitation program performed by our rehabilitation team. After 43 days of treatment under the efforts of our teamwork, the patient was able to walk 800 meters, and then was discharged the next day. To our knowledge, this is the first report of early physical therapy for a patient with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who was receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) whilst awake. This case indicates that early physical rehabilitation is safe and feasible and resulted in an expedited recovery using ECMO whilst awake. The goals for physiotherapy management include avoiding atelectasis, airway clearance, weaning and increasing the functional level. This report may contribute to the current literature on early physical therapy rehabilitation programs for awake ECMO patients.

Several litigation strategies are used to gain support from courts in order to protect animals. While the emerging litigation strategy themed in One Health stimulates judicial protection in the animal health sector, little is known about whether and how such strategies are supported by courts. In this article, we investigate how animal welfare litigation strategies influence judge's choices within their discretion. We argue that litigators equipped with the litigation strategy themed in One Health are placed in an advantageous position in animal health cases, but that this tendency varies markedly across zoonoses. Specifically, we suggest that litigators utilizing One Health's litigation strategy are associated with higher probabilities to win, whereas normal litigators are not. Further, we propose that litigators equipped with the One Health litigation strategy are awarded more damages from judges. We test and find support for our predictions using a cross sectional dataset of civil lawsuit cases centering on the animal health industry in Chinese mainland. Our findings indicate that courts indeed were persuaded by the One Health litigation strategy, even when bound by the discretion rules. At the same time, we suggest that for advocates who would like to litigate for animal welfare in the animal health sector, the litigation strategy themed in One Health might have potentially positive implications.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is once again at the forefront of global attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. The AM technology has demonstrated operational resilience and provided a wide spectrum of on-demand solutions to provide rapid emergency responses and solve supply chains disruptions issues. Present obstacles seen in the battle against COVID-19 may potentially spur into new possibilities for the AM community, standards organisations, and regulatory authorities to collaborate more closely to expedite the progress of this technology. The importance of assurance is rapidly growing on the agenda, and one of the primary problems continues to be a lack of standards and regulations. Nevertheless, regulatory authorities and certification service providers play a critical role in assisting manufacturers to adhere to best practices and getting ahead of the assurance curve to ensure that AM products are safe and reliable.
